The Children of Vienna

The 50 children rescued in 1939 from Vienna by Gilbert and Eleanor Kraus ranged in age from 5 to 14 years old. The group consisted of 25 boys and 25 girls and included several pairs of siblings. They were chosen among hundreds of children whose parents had already applied for hard-to-get visas to America. The 50 children left behind parents, grandparents, uncles, aunts and friends -- without knowing if they would ever see any of them again. Several of the surviving children describe their painful and emotional experiences in 50 Children: The Rescue Mission of Mr. and Mrs. Kraus.
